What If We Stopped Arguing About the “Best” Way to Lose Weight?

Keto or vegan? Intermittent fasting or six small meals? Medication or willpower? Scroll through social media for five minutes and you'll find someone insisting their way is the only way.

All that arguing leaves a lot of people confused, stuck, and wondering why nothing seems to work for them. So let's step back and ask a better question: what actually has to happen for fat loss to occur?

The Fundamentals Aren't Complicated

Underneath every diet trend, the core science is simple: fat loss requires an energy deficit over time. Your body needs to use more energy than it takes in, consistently, for stored fat to be used as fuel.

But losing weight isn't only about the number on the scale. You want to lose fat while keeping as much muscle as possible, because muscle supports strength, energy, metabolism, and healthy aging. Two things help protect it during weight loss:

  • Adequate protein. Eating enough protein gives your body what it needs to maintain muscle while you're in a deficit.
  • Resistance training. Lifting weights, using bands, or doing bodyweight exercises tells your body that your muscle is still needed.
That's it. Every successful approach, no matter what it's called, works by applying these same fundamentals.

The Principles Don't Change. The Strategy Does.

If the fundamentals are simple, why is weight loss so hard? Because knowing what to do and doing it consistently are two very different things. Busy schedules, stress, hunger, cravings, health conditions, and past experiences all shape what's realistic for each person.

That's why there are many tools, and each one is simply a different way to apply the same fundamentals:

  • Calorie tracking works well for people who like data and want to see exactly what they're eating.
  • Portion control helps people who want structure without counting every bite.
  • Better food choices make it easier to feel full and satisfied while eating less.
  • Medical therapy, such as GLP-1 medications, can help reduce hunger and food noise, making a deficit easier to sustain. It works best alongside good nutrition and guidance from a medical provider.
  • Accountability from a coach, provider, or support team helps people stay on track when motivation dips.
None of these is “the best” for everyone. The best strategy is the one that helps you apply the fundamentals consistently.
